Oscar nominee Penelope Cruz is set to re-team with Volver director Pedro Almodovar for his next feature – La Piel Que Habito.

The film is based on French author Thierry Jonquet’s 1995 novel Mygale about a plastic surgeon who exacts hideous revenge on his daughter’s rapist.

Almodovar’s producer brother Agustin says, “The role is far darker” than the feisty heroine Cruz played in Volver.

He adds, “It’s 70 to 80 per cent to be Pedro’s next (project). But Pedro always worked on several ideas at the same time, and he has a second screenplay on the go as well.”

Volver picked up the Best Picture Award and earned Cruz the Best Actress Award at the Goya Awards, Spain’s equivalent of the Oscars, in Madrid on Sunday.
